Step 1 – Stripping Down
When reupholstering a chair or an armchair, we strip down right back to the frame, removing the old fabric and any stuffing so that only the wood remains, and we can start again. In the case of a new frame, of course, we’re ready to go from the off.

Step 2 – Webbing
Once the item is stripped, we insert the webbing that forms the base of the seat and gives the chair its tension – we take care to ensure that it isn’t too soft or too firm in order to optimise your comfort.

Step 3 – Springing
This is the process of lowering and attaching the springs in place. Their correct placement is vital to the stability and comfort of the chair.

Step 4 – Adding the strong base fabric
The strong canvas comes next, covering the springs which are then sewn by hand to the fabric to stabilise the ensemble, ready for the lining.

Step 5 – Stuffing
Coarse animal hair (from the neck area and tail) or vegetable hair stuffing is what makes the seat comfortable and soft. The stuffing should be spread around evenly inside.

Step 6 – Quilting
The stuffing is covered with a quilting cloth which is then hand-stitched to give the seat its definitive form.

Step 7 – White lining
Next, the seat is covered with a white lining fabric over which the top cover fabric of your choice will be placed. The stuffing for the seat back is added at this point.

The seat back is similarly covered with quilting cloth and hand stitched in the traditional way, before being covered once again with a white lining fabric.

Step 10 – Covering of seat back cushion
With the white lining in place, a soft cotton or acrylic padded material is added, over which the top cover will be laid.

Step 11 – Fitting of top cover and jaconet material
Once the white lining is on the seat, it is covered with soft padded fabric in the same way as the chair-back before covering the seat, back and arms of the chair with the customer’s chosen top cover. Finally, a layer of jaconet material is secured to the bottom of the chair seat to hide the springs.

Step 12 – Finishing
The last stage is adding the finishing touches. For this, there are all kinds of options – gold studs, piping, braids – to give your chair its own unique identity
